I started working at a new job a few months ago where I only work 2.5 hours/day so that I could be home more when I had my daughter. I get paid a high hourly wage, and am considered to be a sub-contractor of a program that works with infants. They do not take any money out of my checks, not for taxes, SDI, or anything. I have the tax thing figured out, but am thinking of having another baby in the next few months and am trying to figure out if there is any way for me to get disability for the 6 weeks afterwards. Since I dont pay into SDI, I'm assuming I dont get state disability like I did last time. Am I correct in this? Is there any type of insurance I can purchase that would cover this? I live in California. Thank you.

The above post is in reference to SSI or SSDI.... Pregnancy and other short term illnesses are SDI and don't require the same lengthy process and have more leniancy.

As for the OP:

Q: Do I have to be working for a certain number of days/months/years to be eligible for SDI?

A: Eligibility for SDI is based on the earnings shown in your base period. The wages you earn approximately six to 18 months before the disability claim begins are included in the base period (they must have been subject to the SDI tax). Your base period does not include wages paid at the time your disability begins.

Q: I own my own business. Are self-employed individuals eligible for SDI?

A: Self-employed individuals or employers may be eligible for SDI under a program called Disability Insurance Elective Coverage.
