For a nice, elegant hairstyle or for just casual wear?

It depends on what you consider elegant and casual, but I've always seen chopsticks used when the hair is up in kind of a Gibson Girl hairstyle. I've also seen women use pencils the same as you would chopsticks to hold their hair up when nothing else was available.

twist you hair into a low bun, then put the stick in the thickest part of the bun at the bottom (bottom upward) and push the stick through turn it up and grab some of the hair on the head push through (top downward) this will flip the bun up and should work. Hard to understand with out seeing it though
