Can anyone suggest good, serious literature about learning to put more weight behind my words and actions. I often fell mentally 'light', easy to push around, easy to manipulate, not feeling 'safe' and strong enough to make a stand. I can say what I want, but give up too easily if I don't feel positive response quickly.

I'd start looking into "emotional intelligence". That may help you by helping you understand how people work. That may also lead to other books and subjects that will help. I've read lots of books on similar skills for work, but haven't come across any specifically good for that.

Also, "being assertive".

if a nearby college offers a critical thinking class, that might help. even just checking the reading list of such a class might give you some good reading ideas, though i imagine taking such a class would be more productive than reading about it.

This webpage will help with that and it is about 20 minutes of reading and even mentions a book you can get.
