One of every ten people have schizophrenia in this country. Of all that I have contacted, most are extremely religious and are directed in thought and action by these spirits. As a person that enjoys and is comfortable in reality, I see this attachment to spirits interesting. Is this an escape from the real tangible world because of a perceived fear? Even for those without schizophrenia?

They do? No they don't! I'm not talking to you. Spiritual based religions? What does that mean, I don't know...get out of my head.

One in ten...you mean 30,000,000 People...I don't believe him, or you either.

Why do people base questions on unsubstantiated crap?
Because I might believe it, no I won't, shut up I am typing.
As one who finds you pompous and self appreciating, I cast aspersions in your general direction.

Aren't most people religious atleast in some way? Isn't Atheism religious in its own right?

Logic follows that if a high percentage of the overall population is religious, than any sub-group of that population is religious also.
You might as well ask why so many schizophrenics like to breath, or why so many janitors are deeply religious.

As for WHY Christianity (or any religion) is so appealing to anyone. It provides hope that there is an afterlife. That hope is vastly more preferable than the non-existence of yourself after death that most non-religious doctrines preach. A good parallel to this is: Given the choice between receiving capital punishment for murder, or receiving capital punishment for murder and getting a last meal of your choice, most people will choose the latter just for the sake that the meal lessens the anxiety of the inevitable.

Hope that helps.

I have had direct experience with this problem, and the only answer that I can give you is that they find a comfort zone in church that they cannot find elsewhere. Church people have a tendency to be more sympathetic to their condition and want to help. But there is a limit to which we will go. Eventually, most of these people become more than we can handle---we are not psychiatrist and are not trained or equip ted to handle these people; thus we have to send them away, so that they do not totally disrupt the nature of our mission. Jesus loves them.

Being neither a Christian or a schizophrenic, I don't know. The only blind faith I agree with is that rock band from the 60's/70's.

Most churches remind me of cults.

People are just looking for something to believe in and trust in. You can't believe in the government or trust 90% of the people in this world. There's a lot worse things you canbelieve in than religion

Do you have any actual evidence - results from a systematic study or something - to suggest that Christianity in particular attracts more such people than other religions? That is, are their numbers disproportionate in that one particular religion?

I believe that schizophrenics who have been raised in a certain religion will take the characters and symbols of that religion into their hallucinations.
