One that I did way back in high school was to take a bargraph IC (LM3914, LM3915, or LM3916) and apply a sine wave that I generated with an LM556 timer IC and a low pass filter. The voltage would move up and down and with proper adjustment, the bargraph IC would drive 10 LEDs back and forth like the Cyclons in Battlestar Galatica. There are also digital ways to do this too.
