First of all it is spelled retarded, but that is not a politically correct term anyway. Cutting means you are having emotional problems, you can be very bright and still cut yourself. I believe that Lady Diana had that problem at one time.

I just thought I would add to this...
I'm 20, and I've been cutting for 8 years.
There is NO WAY that there is any link between cutting and mental "retardation." There *can* be a mental illness linked to it, but not always.
Cutting (also known as Self-Injury, SI, Self Harm, etc) is a coping mechanism used vast amongst people between the ages of 11 and 24. It is a way to deal with stress, emotions and many other things. Although, I do not RECOMMEND using cutting as a way to deal with ANYTHING. It is very hard to overcome, and the longer you do it - the harder it is.
It is just like an addiction to a drug. You just can't stop - unless you get the proper help.
I hope this enlightened a few of you - and maybe not make the comments you made on here. It's not fair to judge and make assumptions unless you have fully researched or even experienced this problem that is taking over many people's lives.
Thanks for listening.
And to the few that made some really rude comments - stop being so ignorant - and learn your facts.
OH AND TO THE PERSON WHO POSTED BELOW ME - YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.
bye.

Cutting, self harm, does not mean a person is mentally retarded at all. A person who cuts has other issues. They usually have a very low self esteem and self worth. I have had clients explain it to me in a couple of different ways; When they cut the physical pain of cutting is better than the emotional pain they are experiencing; they cut "because seeing the blood makes me know I am alive"; some have said that it allows the "bad" to be released from them. In most cases a person who cuts suffers from some sort of mental health issues.
If you are a cutter, therapy is a great and needed first step. Cognitive therapy can be very helpful. Medications for the anxiety and depression that usually accompany self harm are also a good thing. I suggest strongly that you seek counseling immediately and find a person to work with you about the underlying reasons for your self harm.
Do yourself a huge favor and find help. You are worth it and deserve it.

I assume that by "retaried" you actually meant "retarded?" Well, I cut myself, and I was bright enough to figure out where the "check spelling" link is and how to use it, so I've clearly got one up on you. There's also the fact that I've consistently tested far enough above average on academic aptitude tests to qualify for loads of "gifted" programs, and am at the top of my class in school. So I'd have to say that no, not all cutters are retarded. Actually, as a point of fact, many cutters are quite bright, and often quite successful as well.

Do you mean 'mentally retarded'? If that, then no, cutters aren't.
Cutting is found when someone has a mental illness (depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), etc), a way of coping (mental, physical or sexual abuse) or a eating disorder.
There's around 1% who cut, but that's an estimate with recorded cases. I think that also includes other ways of self mutilating (burning, hitting, punching themselves and breaking bones). Mental health officials think there is a little more than that.
Cutters cut for reasons for thier own. The main one is that it's a coping mechinism. It then can branch out to releiving stress, to punish one's self, or to 'wake up' from something (bad memory, or something else). After awhile, it gets addicting and feels good to them.
Therapy is pretty much the only way to get over their problem and cutting. It's to learn effective coping techniques. Once you're addictied to something, you practically cannot stop, so it can take weeks or months to get over it.

People who cut themselves are not stupid at all, in fact they are far from it. They feel the pain in the world and are trying to escape from such pain. Given the fact the the Gov. band drugs that might help these people or that their mothers and fathers are to high on their pedestal to believe that their child is in some sort of a dis functional family, they ignore the cry for help and reluctant to give meds or provide console to their child. In Short, the person who cut themselves is trying to escape the pain. Not having meds or proper counseling, they are force to use an alternative. So don't be too quick to judge people, you dame self-rigorous morons.

No, it just means you're stupid. But typing "retaried" instead of "retarded" might be a sign of mental retardation.

Cutting yourself is not a sign that you are mentally retarded but it is a problem that needs to be dealt with in safer ways. It could mean that you have problems with depression, anxiety, or control. You should see a doctor.

NO, duh! it has nothing to do with how retarded you are or anything like that! i agree cutting isnt good, but the people who do it do it for reasons. they might have a bad family life, social life, or depression. and they could also be doing it for attention, which may seem stupid and desperate, but that too is a mental disorder that people can need help with. something in their brain makes them more emotional and "chronically depressed" either way, these people shouldnt be stereotyped or anything like that. yeah they need help, but they're not flippin retarded.
have you ever met a retarded person?
NO it NEVER means that you're mentally retarded, look it up

I think you are trying to say retarded, but spelt it wrong... how ironic.
Anyway, no. Have you ever been upset for some reason and got angry at yourself? Well, some times when people are really depressed they struggle with these feelings, and it is subconciously easier for them to deal with physical pain than the emotions.
