its "konnichiwa" The actual meaning is "good day".
It is not just "good afternoon " as most of the early answers say. It is used to greet some one late in the morning or early afternoon.

It's actually spelled Konichiwa (åæ¥ã) and means basically hello. Keep in mind, that Japanese doesn't translate to English properly, so many words in phrases are lost. And to add to a previous comment, it's Ohayo (ãã¯ã), not Ohio. :3

It's Japanese, and it's used as 'hello' - NEVER goodbye!! It's literal meaning is 'this day' and it can be roughly translated as 'good day'.
In the morning Japanese people normally use Ohayou ãã¯ãã / 御æ©ã.
In the evening it's Konbanwa ããã°ã㯠/ ä»æ©ã¯, which means 'this evening'.
Konnichiwa ããã«ã¡ã¯ / ä»æ¥ã¯ is anytime in between!
I recommend giving the 10 points to Mountain Goat!

konnichiwa literally means "good afternoon". but can also be use for greetings as "hello" during morning or evening casually. like "ohayou/ohayougozaimasu" (good morning) can also be use for greetings not only in the morning but also at night, like night shift works (mostly) when you greet your co-workers. "konbanwa" (good evening) however, is only use for greeting at night.

It means hello and goodbye (not just hello). It's a pleasantry.
