Kabbalah is an interpretation (exegesis, hermeneutic) key, "soul" of the Torah (Hebrew Bible), or the religious mystical system of Judaism claiming an insight into divine nature.
The term "Kabbalah" was originally used in Talmudic texts, among the Geonim, and by early Rishonim as a reference to the full body of publicly available Jewish teaching. In this sense Kabbalah was used in referring to all of known Oral Law. Over time it became a reference to doctrines of esoteric knowledge concerning God, God's creation of the universe and the laws of nature, and the path by which adult religious Jews can learn these secrets.
Kabbalah, according to the more recent use of the word, stresses the esoteric reasons and understanding of the commandments in the Torah, and the occult cause of events described in the Torah. Kabbalah includes the understanding of the spiritual spheres of creation, and the ways by which God administers the existence of the universe.
According to Jewish tradition dating from the 13th century, this knowledge has come down as a revelation to elect saints from a remote past, and preserved only by a privileged few. It is considered part of the Jewish Oral Law by the majority of religious Jews in modern times, although this was not agreed upon by many Talmudic and medieval scholars, as well as many modern liberal rabbis and a minority of Orthodox rabbis.

The Kaballah is an ancient book.
There is a small sect of Jewish people who study it.
It is written so that much study supplies many interpretations.
It is of no particular value to anyone except those who make an almost profession out of searching for knowledge!
If you want to be part of the IN CROWD wear the red string - but instead of reading Kaballah just read a few pages from the Telephone book picked at random. Think about the names and what they might""conjure up"" sounds stupid - but of the same value.
Nex year THE CROWD will probably find the I Ching! (method of fortune telling that is equally valueless!)

Personally I don't know if I would call it a religion. It's more like Jewish mysticism. Deals with the Tree of Life and emanations, etc. I didn't get to finish with my study group on the topic, but if I had to sum it up, I might consider it a map of how energy works in the universe and how it all ties in with the Divine.

Jewish Mysticism.... though the stuff the celebrities are into, is merely a Hollywood version of it (which means it has some basic points in common, but overall, it's a publicity stunt).
www.aish.com should be able to help you with the details... there's just way too much to get into on here....

kabbalah is jewish mysticism...it should only be studied by scholars well read in all aspects of the torah....otherwise you won't understand it and it could potentially be dangerous.
the red string is supposed to ward of the "evil eye" that's another person being jealous of you....
it's sort of like an amulet, but I haven't heard of any real kabbalists wearing them. it comes from when a red string was wrapped around sarah's tomb seven times...
there's more of an explanation on inner.org
