He may have been looking for salvation, of a more immediate type. Example; the messiah on a horse, with a sword riding into the heat of battle. I know people who expect this, even today. There were several stereotypical concepts of the messiah floating around at that time, and they also persist to this day.

He probably started to think like many other Jews at that time, they were looking for an earthly kingdom, but Jesus was not showing any signs of doing that, and John seemed to start questioning what he thought about Jesus.
