Jesus wept is the shortest verse in the Bible, but it says columns about our Lord. It appears in the book of Mark, a gospel account that depicts Jesus as Christ the Man. Matthew shows Jesus as Christ the King, Luke depicts Jesus as Christ the Messiah, and John depicts Jesus as Christ the Son of God. Jesus did not come to earth to apologize for anything, but to sacrifice himself for our sin so that we would not have to do so. He paid the price of his shed blood that God has always demanded for atonement for sin. God did not beat up on humankind in the Old Testament. He chastened his children just as any parent chastens an unruly child. God always intends good for us regardless of how we view the situation. Children do not like to be punished, but it is a parent's responsibility to correct a disobedient child in a way that will get his/her attention. God is no different, although he must use extreme measures because the disobedience that he deals with is extreme. God is merciful and loving, for he could destroy us at any time---he is our creator and therefore has the right to put us down. I thank him always that he loves us.

No apology necessary. Mankind broke the agreement, time and again.
There are many examples of God's wrath, but if you look at how far apart they are and what preceded them, you'll see that God is amazingly long-suffering.
In the book of Hosea, God asks Hosea to marry a prostitute. Their relationship is symbolic of God's relationship with Israel. They were constantly unfaithful. It's easy to be offended by God's wrath, until you understand what it must be like to live with such infidelity. Most husbands would not put up with that sort of behavior for a week, much less for generations.
Jesus came to redeem us. To save us from ourselves. To reconcile us to Himself.

It would seem that way to me. He offered his Son. And they honored his offer, at Calvary. Their attitude would be as you described, resentful.
I suppose their was/is a lot of resentment on both sides of the human/God releationship.
