You could check with the university in your hometown or nearby to see if they Modern Language Department is offering any trips to Paris. My alma mater offers a 10-day trip to Paris each Spring Break...and it's not solely for students. I still go! It's inexpensive and a wonderful trip. It's worth a shot.
As for a travel guide book...I highly recommend Rick Steves' Paris or Rick Steves' France. If you want to do it yourself, he's got tons of tips in his books for inexpensive restaurants and hotels...plus ways to save precious time.
Just keep an eye on the airlines...Delta, Air France, American. See if any offer specials at various times. You can also check Travelocity and Expedia.

hummm have you looked for a french air line package deal? For australia I use quantas for in the us I use southwest airlines and get car, hotel and tickets. If I knew europe I would tell you that. I know england has brithish air ways. Can you look into a french airline or somewhere close to france and get a package? Or what about the bed and breakfast route with buying a ticket from an airline directly that might be cheaper than a travel agent. I found travel agents wanted me to go with domestic carriers for connections and made up strange reasons to do this like they would transfer my bags. It was not ture. I had to go through customs and had to do it myself anyway. They get comissions and had try to sway customers in certain ways that might not be in the best interest of the customer anyway. Hope that helps. I also found reading on the net prior about local attractions and hours of operation was helpful for planning an efficient trip.

The library resource and travel sections. Also as I tell everyone going to a new city for the first time. Take a full day tour you don't get a lot of time in any one place but you get to see what's there and decide where you want to go back too and spend more time at and where you don't.
