I used to work in a booth at a parking lot where you pay when you come in and I would get like 50 bucks in the begining of the shift, so if someone gave me three 20s in a row I was basically screwed, so yeah I would get irritated, though it's not the consumer's fault and as far as I know USPS workers do not make minimum wage, if anything they make decent money for standing at the register. Thus they should be more professional than a hang-over me after a night of drinking back in the day.

He probably had like no change, a long line and now some one is probably going to have to run to the bank which means that there will be less staff and the line will get longer and people will be angrier when it is finally their turn. Sounds like he was having a bad day.
It is not your fault that they don't have enough change. They either didn't plan well enough or more people than normal were coming with big bills.
If you were really offended, complain to the manager.
Other than that, develop a thicker skin. This kind of thing is going to happen as long as their are cash registers.

Well, the postal clerk was right in asking. But, he has no reason to be rude. Obviously he wanted to serve you well, and small notes would have helped him.
You did not say whether you handed him a $20 or a $100 for one 0.50 cents stamp. If that's what you did ($100 note), then hey - apologize, smile or do whatever. You spoiled his day. The till did not have enough to give you any change.
As I said, he should not be rude to you though. (probably he could mumble under his breathe that you pretend not heard).

Ain't heard much about it lately, but there was a good stretch of years some time back when every eight or nine months or so, someone at a post office somewhere would show up to work with a machine gun and just hose the place down, killing everybody.
Do NOT antagonize these people.

i would have asked for the manager. it isnt up to a clerk to tell you how you can pay. maybe he didnt have the change for it. i know i get annoyed with people who come in first thing on a sunday when we have few small bills and pay for something thats $1.87 with $100 bill, but there isnt anything i can do about that but ask if they have anything smaller, if they dont, oh well, i cant do anything about that

Sounds like you ran into someone who'd had a bad day. Postal workers have very stressful jobs, and sometimes they take it out on whoever comes to them at the wrong time.
