Acts 1:9-10 "After he (Jesus) said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the SKY as he was going..." Well Christ was going to heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19. So he went up.
Now where is it. Paul, in 2 Corinthians 12:1-4, says that there is a 3rd heaven in which is paradise. This is the place that we know as Heaven where God sits on His throne. The 1st heaven is the sky. We know this because the sky is where the birds fly and Genesis says the birds fly in the heavens. The 2nd heaven will come right after the 1st so the 2nd is space. Now Heaven, where God is, can not be in space because Paul says Heaven is "inexpressible" and we can describe and take pictures of space. The 3rd comes right after the 2nd. So Heaven is not in our universe. It is beyond even space. HOW AMAZING!

"Heaven" is not in outer space. Heaven is another dimension. The spiritual plane which is an alternate dimension to this denser physical dimension in which we now reside.
Some theorize that the spiritual dimension is a mere 3 feet above ours, but because it's vibration is so much faster than ours we cannot see it. Supposedly, it is a perfect geographical representation of the earth, as it was upon creation. And each world with life has it's own version of heaven, or a spiritual dimension which physically mirrors its own geography.
But we do get glimpses from time to time. That is why when people see "ghosts" or spirits they look as though they are floating in mid-air. They are really standing on the ground in their own dimension, 3 feet above ours.

Possibly because Jesus ascended up into the clouds? As to Heaven, I'm not sure. I DO know that the Heavenly Jerusalem is a city in the shape of a Borg cube that'll come down from the sky.
Some people might find that appropriate...

I think it's considered "up" because there is no other place to look, also that's where all the unexplainable stuff is, such as the sun, stars, rain lightning etc.
Possibly a visitation from someone in a space ship started the whole thing.
Heaven, as people perceive it would have to be in another dimension, not in another part of the universe, unless god is an alien.

Genesis 1:6-8
8 and God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
Defination of firmament...From H7554; properly an expanse, that is, the firmament or (apparently) visible arch of the sky: - firmament.

Well down in the Earth is fire and brimstone and sulfur, all the things associated with Hell, so I guess it's natural to assume heaven would be in the opposite direction (up).
I don't think heaven has a physical location in this world, but if it did, it might be in the Eagle nebula as seen by HST.

Because the Bible says that when God returns he will come through the clouds in the sky. Heaven is so far up that no-one could even comprehend going that far.

When most religions were made, man had no knowledge of space. The stars looked pretty, so they wanted to go there. Now as usual, they revise when confronted with fact, and say it is what they believed all of the time. So now they will try to say it is in another dimension, because they can not say it is in a place that we can eventually get to with future technology.

The ancient people of the Middle East wanted to describe a place where life was better than it is on earth. It would be a good place devoid of the hardships on earth. This was before the telescope, when they didn't know any better.
Now, we look into higher dimensions for ultimate truths.
