He doesn't have a halo in the Duccio version...anyone know why?

I read the answers posted and I agree. Here is another opinion as well. From a purely spiritual sense in art, people who died shouldn't have halo's. They don't become Angels. Angels are a race that serves God in heaven willingly and some of them became Satan and his demons as well. But we are not life forms on the level of God. Instead we are His creation. From that stand point we can't have an angelic halo since only our soul can dwell in the afterlife of Heaven or Hell.

The Artist was usually the one to put symbols on their work. If the Church commissioned a painting, they had the last say before presentation. An example of this is the Marion symbols: 13 stars over the halo, the crescent moon(serpent)etc. But, the point is some icons fell in and out of favor with time(s).
This is just one reason.

Saint Peter was not a saint in the time of the deciples, and the term saint is man made.
If you are looking at a picture, you're looking at an artist's rendering of the event.
