Landmines are made with all different sorts of explosives and shrapnel.
With the most common form of landmin the mine doesnt actually detonate because someone is standing on it- the weight of the person on it engages (like pulling the pin out of a grenade) and explodes once the weight is taken off. However there are more complex mines that sense movement in the ground and the vibrations cause it to detonate when ever somebody gets near

A typical land mine will consist of a casing, an explosive filler and some sort of initiation device.
Generally - if you step on an antipersonnel mine they detonate instantly.

Its just shrapnel packed into a metal container. It has a pressure sensitive lever. It works kinda like the drive through at Mcdonalds, you drive on it, it senses pressure, and you get the effect.
