I have always asked that same question. Personally, I believe there was no free will involved if it was prophesied that it would happen. To not do it would seem to be against God's will.
Is it literally a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't?

The Gospel clearly states that Judas betrayed Jesus. Further, Jesus also stated at the Passover dinner, "...but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." [Math. 26:24]
The Bible records Judas' betrayal of Jesus, and subsequent suicide. Where he is now, I cannot say for sure. But I do know, it would have been better if he had not been born.
This clearly shows two important aspects of God: (1) He knows the future, and (2) He is in control of everything, for even the evil of Judas played a part in the death and resurrection of our Lord who's sin-bearing death brought forgiveness and salvation to the faithful.

Judas fulfilled bible prophecy because of Greed. Judas was a brother of the Christian faith, but because of his lust for money, this action caused him to fulfill this prophecy. Judas is villanized because he helped put God's son to death. It would be the same if Jesus was around today and someone did the same. The media would have been all over him.

It is all about the heart. Jesus knew Judas heart, and knew that when the time came, that Judas would betray him for MONEY, for that was Judas true GOD in his heart.
So, yes, Judas betrayed Jesus, and yes, he was picked because he would do it.
Villanized because like all others who follow something more important to them than GOD, they lose out on eternal life.
We all live forever, our only choice is where we are going to spend it, Heaven or Hell.

If jesus needed to die to save your sins surely Judas did the right thing?
Maybe he was the only one who understood what jesus was saying and acted accordingly.
As for the villanized thing, everybody needs somebody to hate, and it was written into the bible that Judas was the offical hated person of the christian faith.

Yeah, he did. It's such a complicated thing for humans to think about...the fact that it was Judas's choice, but God knows everything, and He knew it would happen before it did, and there were prophecies about it before it happened. So even though it seems like God was making it happen, it was really Judas's choice. And as far as Judas going to heaven...nobody knows that for sure.

Predestination doesn't supercede free will! Judas could've restrained himself spiritually and been set free of the demons that led him to his death. I feel sorry for him actually. To sit at the feet of the Master, to learn firsthand what man has struggled for centuries to understand and throw it all away for 30 pieces of silver is a testimony to the seeds of greed that are still sown even today.

That's one of Christiandom's many paradoxes, explained, as always, by a lot of doublespeak from Christians who really don't have a clue how to resolve it.
I don't believe Judas betrayed anyone. That's mythology. "The bible says..." doesn't make it so.
Christians should read this

This is a hot debate, these days. It has a lot to do with the findings in the Gospel of Thomas which contradict the Gospel of John.
