That depends on your price range, but Ping g5's are a great set for the price(but a little expensive). If your looking for a low priced set I would suggest something like Cougars or Sports Authorities Tour Collections sets. Tommy Armours Ram sets are also good. Golf balls are completely preference every golfer likes different ones, but you can't go wrong with a top-flite, callaway or pinnacles. There are dozens of different type of balls under each of those brand names, but the one that is right for your hitting style is up to you to find. As for club length it does matter, but almost all club sets that don't come with a custom fit are usually sized for the average male size (between 5'5 & 5'9).

Any kind of club or ball is fine for a beginner. Just don't get the tour performance balls or clubs. Preferably a club with a really large sweet spot. Club length is very important though. Go to your local golf store, they will set you up with the correct length and hosel angle (angle that the shaft makes to the club face) for your swing type. Have fun!

You could buy pre-owned clubs or a complete set of inexpensive clubs from Kmart, WalMart or the sort. Spend money on lessons, not on clubs. As you advance and decide you love the game (and how could you not love this game) you will decide to buy more expensive gear.

Club length does matter. Depending on your height, longer and shorter clubs will improve your game.

Hit 'em straight and enjoy. If you are luck enough to find yourself on a golf course, you're on a golf course.

I am unsure of what brand to use, but length can be very important. Length of club will factor into your stance, your hold and your swing. That is why pros don't use clubs off the rack, their clubs are specially made. Imagine a 6'0 husband giving his clubs to his 4'11" wife or your 8 year old using a pro weight & length bat for t-ball hehe.
Go to your local driving range or golfing store and talk to them about the variations of club length on current store available/brand name clubs. Then do research on what the clubs offer and who else sell those brands. Don't let the sales person push you for clubs.

I think the club shaft, both length and stiffness, are the parts that matter the most.

Go to a good golf shop. Tell them you want to know what to tell your ________ (wife or Mom) what to get you for your birthday. (This will keep them from pressuring you to buy then.)

Let them fit you for the right length, grip size, and shaft stiffness. Depending on your speed of the club head they can recommend the right compression for balls.

Now your ready to go shopping. It would be wise to take some lessons first. A good instructor will have advise on club selection too.

Club length matters in how tall you are. That's why there are men's, women's, and kids' clubs.
