A memorial service (like a funeral) is the celebration of the life that has ended. It is service for friends, family, all who knew the deceased. A viewing is when the friends, family, etc. can go past the coffin and see the deceased. It is usually the days leading up to the funeral.

A viewing is usually done before a funeral (generally the night before) or memorial service. Sometimes, there is no viewing at all. Everything is highly individual these days. A memorial service is generally more personal.

If you don't know them well, don't bother with either. Send a card or something instead.
