My 11 yr old Dalmatian has been incontinent most of her life. The vet put her on Phenylpropanol, but it gradually stopped working. After various tests, the vet can see nothing to cause the incontinence. My house smells terrible but I refuse to put her down for incontinence alone. Any suggestions??

they do make doggie diapers. mine hated them, but she had long hair. i do know a dog that uses them every day because she's spiteful and will otherwise pee on everything.

have her checked out for high protein levels. if my dog has too much, her kidneys start to shut down and she doesnt know she's peeing on everything when she's laying down. my older dog also became incontinent due to lack of feeling in her waist down (she eventually had to be put down because it eventually caused her to not be able to walk.).

and also have her checked for cushings (sp?) disease. they origionally thought that was my dogs problem before finding out about the protein levels.

There are doggie pads available at pet stores. However, that gets expensive. What is causing the incontinence? Did the dog eat something bad? Is it due to old age? I'd want to cure the problem, not just fix the house.

I'm sorry to hear that the Phenylpropanol stopped working. Did you try upping the dose?

Another thing you can look into is "doggie diapers", which are sold for both males and females. I believe these are even commonly available at PetSmart, although other varieties may be available.

If she's not on a special diet for anything else health related, you might try changing up her food to see if you can get any change. I suspect there are other dietary and supplement things you can try, although I haven't had experience with any of them.

Many houses with large dogs don't smell too great, but yours is already pretty old for a large dog. If you and your friends can put up with the smell for a while, the problem will self-correct. Sorry, I like dogs a lot. Suggest a smaller dog next time, if you decide there will be a next time, but even a small one can smell up a house.

They do have the doggie diapers at pet stores.
You could try a Homeopathic remedy called Leak No More. It is sold by a lot of stores. I've seen it listed at
www.jefferspet.com
Haven't tried it myself, but I hear that it works.

Keep your dog out of the house! If there is nothing left to do to solve the problem, that is the only logical answer.
