Graduation......so they will be moving out into the real world. So.. either you get them something practical like a gift card to a department store. (They will need work clothes.) or go with something they can keep and remember like some art work.

If art work there is a good place on the web where there is quality art with cartoon art. If they are becoming a policeman, find a picture of Bugs Bunny in a police outfit. Or find something that reminds you of them. Maybe Daffy Duck in a motor boat.

If it's a :
high school graduate- money for college, supplies etc. If that's what they plan to do.
College- something to commemorate the years they were in school..
Elementary school- something small or money. Although I really don't think a gift for this graduation is necessary..

I'd get them a gift card to a favorite store, or if he/she is college bound get them a gift card to a place like Target, so he/she could get stuff for the dorm room.

money is always a good gift. it used to be considered thoughtless, however, i would prefer to give cash and let the recipient use it how they wish, than to spend money on a gift they don't like, or never use.

what age? what level of education? are they going on to more education?

Make them a scrapbook of all the memories you have of them from the period of time they were in school... it will help them remember their time at school.. and remember you.
