Don't worry about breeds. Go to a local shelter/rescue, and adopt a dog. Have nothing in mind, just get the one that catches your heart above all others. Trust me, there will be one of those.

Do not do what the first person wrote. Different breeds are very important to know about. A Collie, or ACD need an extreme amount of time and energy. They are smart, but need to be worked daily. A great Dane is a wonderful dog, but huge and a limited life span. Terriers bark all the time, Beagles are not that smart. There is a breed for each person, but you should take Internet test and study the breeds to find out what is best for you. But take one of the dog breed test found on any dog site. They will help

It all depends, do you like big dogs, or small dogs? Do you want a lap dog, or one that is active and loves playing? For instance, my sister has a Great Dane...she is a sweet dog, but can be very hyper, and loves running around. She is HUGE though. I myself, have a Shih Tzu...he is 20 lbs at last weigh in at the vet, great lap dog, and doesn't mind sleeping most of the day while i'm at work. I recommend going to Barnes and Noble, or even the library and looking at dog books. There are so many different breeds out there. I would like to recommend though adopting a dog rather than getting one from a breeder. You would save a life by rescuing a dog rather than buying one from a breeder. Good luck on whatever you decide! =)

well, give more specifics. What characterisics are you looking for in a dog? Where do you live..house, apartment? Do you have a yard? Big or small dog?
I have a jack russel mix. She is very smart and loyal, but very energetic.
And I have a border collie, smartest dog I've ever had. He's only 4 months old and already is house broken and knows all his basic commands.
No matter what you choose, please adopt. Even if its not a pure-breed dog, sometimes they are the best to have.
Save a life!!

I may get bashed for saying this, but please, please, don't pay hundreds of dollars to buy a dog from a breeder. There are wonderful animals just waiting for a chance at life at your local shelter. Think of how many animals die every day because people insist on spending hundreds of dollars on a dog, thinking he is better just because he comes with papers instead of rescuing one in need. If you find you are set on getting a purebred, then locate a shelter for that breed. (example, if you're looking for a Boxer, then Google "Boxer Rescue".) Even if there is not a location near you, you still may be able to adopt from a rescue in another state. There are volunteers, such as myself, called "Animal Transporters" who drive hundreds of miles to get an animal to a good home, rather than having it put to death. Adopt, Adopt, Adopt! And if you simply must part with your money... Donate, Donate, Donate!

Contrary to what snooty breeders might tell you, the best kind of breed is the Mixed-Breed: The All-American Mutt
Do your research first, though. Dogs are a HUGE commitment.

You ever own a dog before? Consider your lifestyle and space limitations.
For a first-time dog owner with limited space, I'd recommend a Beagle or Basset Hound. Maybe a Labrador Retriever or Cocker Spaniel.

you need to decide how large, how much time you will have for the puppy, do you have small children etc. never buy a puppy from a pet store. when you have decided, contact your vet for breeders in your area. i highly recommend your local pet shelter,as there are many unwanted pets who need a loving home. you can save the life of one. there are also rescue services for every breed of dog.

There are many, many things to consider before you decide on what kind of dog to get. There is some good info here:
