We have lived in this house for 2 years, pets were ok to have so we got an Old English Bulldog. Recently my landlord decided to let his daughter take over and be the landlord, when she saw our dog she asked to buy it. We told her it was not for sale so she decided that we have 1 week to get rid of the dog. I am heartbroken, can she do this? Help me please.

check your contract, for a pet clause. if there's not one there but your landlord previously knew that you had the dog you have a really good case. Even if he didn't know, someone can't just ask to buy a member of your family and then evict you when you refuse. If there's no clause, technically he could evict you but I would imagine you should get a lot more notice, plus this is blackmail. seek legal adivce, this guy sounds like a jackass who indugles his selfish daughter- AND she doesn't have the right to make demands if he is still the owner as she's only acting on his behalf, only he can do that, does he know? Get it in writing then talk to a lawyer. If push comes to shove - leave, you don't want to be beholden to such morons. Good luck.

Did you pay a deposit for the dog with the past landlord? If so, that would be sufficient to keep the animal, but if there is no verbiage in the lease or hard proof of dogs being allowed then you will have to look for a new house. That really sucks!!

She shouldn't be able to do that, but she can if you don't have it in writing that you're allowed to have a dog, typically that should be a part of your lease. The only other venue you have is to try to contact her father and see if he could have a talk with her. She may be the landlord, but I'm sure he still calls the shots in the end.

It depends on if it is in the original contract. If it is written to where you can keep a dog then you should be fine, and if she still is mad, then you can take it to court. She doesn't sound like a landlord I'd be interested in renting from. You could also I guess try reporting her to the BBB, if nothing comes up, at least her name would be in their system as a complaint that was filed. =) Good luck, and keep us updated!

Did you sign a lease? If you did, and the lease does not specify that you can't have pets you should be able to keep your dog, at least until your current lease runs out. If it does not specify, or if you have no lease, she can pretty much set whatever rules she wants. If you are unsure, contact a lawyer who will answer questions for free - laws can differ from state to state, and from town to town. Good luck - I hope you can keep him!

if your rental agreement says you are allowed pets then you do not have to get rid of the dog - make sure it is in writting - most cities have landlord tenants associations that can help in disputes like this... sounds like you will have continued problems though so I would look to move out anyhow

That is the most terrible thing i ever heard. I have 2 dogs and nobody has the right to tell me that i cannot have them..does anyone else have dogs in your building? Go to court before you get rid of your dog.

No she can not do that. unless in your lease it is written no pets but if it isnt then no she cant do this and make sure on new lease signing to read for this. If you have been able to have pets then the court says they can not change this as long as your lease is valid if you have no lease then she never can add it on as long as your there.

If you have a lease ,no she cant, she is pressuring you to sell the dog to her. Its called vindictive eviction and you can take her to small claims court to prove your point. I hope you can .I sure wish you luck. And you have at least 30 days before she can force you out FIGHT it
