I am a straight, just want to make sure the person I am dating not something else. I am not against bi, lesbian or gay just that I only want to be with a straight person. Is this kind of question offensive and will be a turn off and ruin the new date?

Appreciate all the good answers, just want to add that what I really concern is whether he is a BISEXUAL?

It is assumed that the person you date is hetero sexual else why would they be dating You ...Yes bad manners. And stupid to date people when you question there orientation.

If you are on a "date" with a person, there is already an implication that they are sexually attracted to you, and by the end of a single date you should be able to tell for sure. That doesn't rule out the possibility of your date being attracted to both genders, so if you care about that, you should feel free to ask. Asking won't help much since you can rarely believe answers to questions like that.

If you are on a romantic date w/ a guy, and you are straight, would his being straight be a prerequisite for the date??? If you have any doubts about his sexual orientation, and are looking to pursue a relationship then heck yes, it is a appropriate. Who wants to waste their time DATING someone who has other ideas about what their interaction means (as in, he thinks you're "hanging out")?

I would want to know before the 1st date! Times have changed since I last dated. I will be married 13 years next month.

It depends on the person, but yeah, they might find that offensive and you'd ruin the date. Obviously if it's a "date" they're not gay. I would agree with the person who said to ask before "having nookies".

Could be too early in the relationship, but if anything other than straight is a dealbreaker then ask away. Better to find out sooner than later.

if the person is dating you, then they're obviously into women... so that's all that should matter. that is personal information, that i'm sure they'd share with you down the road...
and also, asking a guy if he's straight is a sure way to make him NOT want to talk to you again.

Well, if its a guy and he's not straight is he likely to be dating a girl? No, I don't think so. Likewise, if its a girl and she's not straight is she likely to be dating a guy? again, I don't think so.
the question really answers itself, you'll likely come off as stupid if you ask at all.

Well, if he's dating you he's probably not gay. Maybe you can bring it up in a casual conversation? Just don't flat-out ask him, he might get offended thinking you think he looks gay or bi or whatever...

sex is very important info you need to ask them on the first date before any more involvement takes place. Why raise your hopes on a first date and destroy them on the second?
