To apply for benefits for your son you may phone the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 800-772-1213 or 800-325-0778 (TTY) Monday - Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. You may also apply on-line at: http://www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability/ Either of these methods will secure your son's Protective Filing Date. Benefits are usually awarded retroactive to this date, though, sometimes to an even earlier date.

Depending on your son's age, both his parents' and/or his work history, and his/your assets, he may be eligible for either or both Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
