I have a candy jar that I keep on my desk at work, and I keep it there obviously to share, however, my coworkers are getting greedy and there have been times when I just filled it (I fill it with miniature chocolates usually) and come back from my day off to find it completely EMPTY! I'm getting frustrated, because this is averaging me filling it twice a week , and spending around 60 bucks a month on this candy jar. I know I put it there for everyone to enjoy, so do I have the right to say something about this??

I would not say anything, but stop being compelled to buy candy for it constantly. Someone in my office has a similar tin of candy put out, but once it's gone, it's gone, until she feels like filling it up again. There's no obligation for you to fill it everyday to satisfy someone's sweet tooth. Let them go a week or so everytime it empties, and gradually, they'll learn to make it last longer (because they know they won't be getting any more for a while.)

Put out a donation jar for the candy with a small sign on it. Remind the other coworkers to contribute to their candy jar. When there is enough money to buy more candy buy more. You can still donate candy also. $60 is way too much for one person to pay a month!
They should just be happy that you keep it filled. It is a nice touch in an office. Stay cheerful about it.

What about this. Tell everyone that you enjoy sharing the candy but it's getting a little too expensive for one person to do all of the time. Then suggest that everyone take turns buying the candy. If that doesn't work then just lock up the candy in your desk so no one can get to it except you.

You ABSOLUTELY have a right to say (and do!) something about this!

Taking things for granted is *sigh* an unfortunate trait amongst us humans, so please do something to set us straight as & when the opportunity arises!

Put another candy jar on your desk at work with a little note attached to it: "Missing the candy?! Then please feel free to make a contribution to continuing supplies. C'mon now... empty out your pockets like you've emptied my candy jar!" Or something to that effect - but do put a smiley face in there somewhere!

That should passive-aggressively let people know (without making a stink) that you will no longer be known as the "freebie candy lady" in the office!

Whatever you do do, please drop me a line & let me know. I'd love to hear how you actually resolve this issue! Good luck!

I can relate to your dilemma. How we handled it at our office was when the jar was getting low, I would ask everyone to make a donation to refill it. There were times that it didn't get filled back up for quite some time however, they soon got the point and coughed up some money. In the meantime, I kept some candy in my desk drawer so that I didn't suffer from chocolate withdraws! Hope this helps!

you have 3 choices
1- continue to fill it and don't complain, you are doing it to share
2- fill it only once a week and hope others will get the hint
3- make a "contributions" jar and hope your coworkers will leave a bit of change and not just the empty candy wrappers.

Remove the jar from time to time and gradually weeing them of the jar of chocolates. Or perhaps start a candy fund. That way no one gets anything without putting something in and your not stuck with the funding responsibilities.

Say nothing..
Either sneeze over your desk loudly or say to someone close by for all to hear "Gee, I am glad that strange rash on my hand cleared up, I was starting to worry", then slowly place your hand in your lollie jar.. if that fails mini laxatives..
Result :-
Less eager greedy hands nicking your chocy's.. (just kidding)

Keep some in your draw, like one other answerer said, and the rest in the jar on your table.. and when it runs out do not fill it again until the next week..

$60 monthly for candy is a lot in my opinion... I think I would just stop putting it out if no-one else bothers to contribute anything... at my office we also have a candy jar, but everyone in the department usually brings some candy to add to it.... it is really rude for someone to keep eating your candy without offering to replace it at least occasionally...

1. Sign limiting daily take
2. Sign saying "Candy jar is costing $60/month
donations now being accepted"
3. With that much candy, you might consider buying wholesale
to get more for your $$$
