According to the Pomeranian Breed Standard (see http://www.americanpomeranianclub.org/standard.htm ), the average weight of a Pom is 3-7 lbs. So even if there was such a thing as a "Toy Pomeranian" (which there is not), your dog wouldn't be one. :)

All Toy breeds are prone to whelping problems -- apparently C-sections are common in Poms (see http://www.bi-mar.com/pomeranianfaqs.asp ). If you decide to breed your Pom, it's likely that you may end up in the vet's office for the surgery, which has its own set of problems...some mothers wake up from anesthesia and refuse to nurse/acknowledge the puppies as their own, which means lots of bottle feeding (every few hours, 24 hours/day) for you. And because the puppies are anesthetized when the mother is, some of them never wake up. I dealt with a C-section about 10 years ago in which only 1 of the 4 puppies in the litter survived. If I had a breed in which C-sections were common, I don't think I could handle it.

If you still wish to breed, please check into all of the possible genetic health problems the breed is prone to (the above link dicusses those, as well), and test your dog against as many of those as possible.

Right now, she is too young to be bred. You should wait until she is at least 2, and fully mature. For even more info on breeding, check out these links:

If you choose not to breed (a wise choice, IMO), you should have her spayed. This will prevent lots of mess and hassle for you, and most importantly health problems for her down the road.

Good luck!

you shouldnt ever breed a dog until after 2 yrs old. Also small dogs(I also have 2 poms, one 4 lbs and one 6) and smaller dogs sometimes have a turning and the puppies are not able to be born with out C section.... and also can be very dangerous to the mom and pups. my aunt lost one of her fav poms this way, and hasnt breed since.

I would contact a local breeder to ask more questions if you are still considering. though Like I said, a stud service probably wouldnt see her until after 2 yrs.

smaller dogs tend to have more problems whelping.

she is on the small end for poms 4.1/2lb - 5.1/2lb. if you breed with a smaller male she should be ok.

never breed on the first season.
she must have at least 1 season off between litters.
never breed under 1 years old
max of 6 litters per pemale

hey i have a pom too! i noticed they are getting very popular now... well anyways your pom is a healthy weight, poms usually weigh 3-8 pounds, and if you are thinking about breeding your little pom and are concerned about his weight, he may just have been the runt of the litter.

Wait about six months before breeding her and breed her to an equally small male and she should be fine. Watch her closely. Good Luck!
