why do we need to know about evolution? Its not like its going to save us in the future...?

You answered your own question there and don't realise it! We need to learn about the evolution of all things so that we can safe the future. If we or anything else that lives on the planet stay stagnant or dies out with no one aware then it upsets the balance of our world and we could become a rock with no life at all.

Evolution is a constant ongoing process and we have to try and understand how it works. As we are not cleaver enough to look into the future we can only learn how it has worked in the past to try and figure what is likely to happen in the future.

Personally, I reckon Darwinian Evolution's not the best ever theory, and pretty soon someone's going to come up with a better one. I am not enamoured of the Creationist thing though.

I guess the schools just want to go above and beyond on teaching, so they won't get criticized by people who say their child is not learning enough.

we need to learn about evolution because it is the only proof
we dont want to be slaves to religion forever
we need science and religion to balance the world out
and we dont need children to believe in religion because as they get older, it is their choice if they want to be religious.
