If you look at today's society, the younger generations (both male and female) don't know how to do a lot of the things the older generations do. This is in part due to changes in the family dynamic. Many women work outside the home. This coupled with children, homework, sports or other extra-curricular activities puts a big time constraint on "getting the basics" done (i.e. cooking, cleaning, and enjoying quality family time. Sometimes it's easier and quicker to grab a meal out than cook one. Of course some women (and men) just don't have the knack to make something edible - that's okay - we all have those skills we just can't master. But it would seem beneficial to get back to the basics and know how to do them so you can be self-sufficient. Fast food isn't always the answer. Maybe the answer lies in a restructuring of our time and priorities so we can enjoy the basics and pass the skills on to our kids.

Cooking is a skill everyone should have, at least the basics. My mother dislikes cooking, but did it every night and taught both my brother and I how to. We are both excellent cooks now.

But as several people pointed out, it isn't an issue of just woman not cooking. It is a change in our society as a whole. People no longer place the same emphasis on family dinners and activities at home, which is really sad. We have family dinner every night at our house, without the TV or other distractions. It is often the only time we get to spend together as a family during the week and I look forward to it every night.

I'm 23 and an Engineer with a VERY busy life. My fiance and I both do our fair share of cooking though. Even when we only have half and hour to get dinner we will NOT buy microwave meals. I may not be an amazing cook but at least I can put a meal together!

Modern women need to have a variety of skills not just cooking and cleaning so many just drop these chores. My other half is a more adventurous cook than me though!

I'm the younger generation (17 yrs old) and cook all the time. Actually, practically everyone around here cooks....but I live in the South and women are still "suppose" to cook, but I don't care because I love it.

I agree, alot don't seem to. What do they teach em in schools these days? Yeah, learning to cook is a pretty important skill, and I try and include my girls in preparing and making simple dinners or baking.

Saying that, my Mum didn't let me in the kitchen very often when I was a kid, so I learned to cook in my first job as a care assistant..they said hi, right you are on cooking duty today 3 course meal for these guys please. I thought oh ****...still that job taught me how to cook. I still burn things from time to time though.

I guess it's easier to get a Mucky D's or some sort of micro meal now. Do they still have home economics in school?

Its suprising that alot of women don't know how too cook these days. In this modern world that we live in men are learning too cook which is a good thing. I think both sexes and all ages of people should be able to cook.

Both men and women should be able to cook, food is one thing that you must have, so do it yourself and gain the satisfaction of eating your creation. In my opinion as a woman, we are getting very lazy in the home in general, and my cleaning skills are pretty crap, but I always cook, its fun to experiment.

Personally I'd rather a woman not cook thank think cooking was putting a ready meal in a microwave or oven.

What wrong with real food made from real vegetables and ingredients -it just as easy and 10000000000 times better for you.

with the modern idea of cooking I'd rather do it myself too

More important , what do we think about anyone that doesn't cook .

By the time i was 12 i could cook a full crimbo dinner , glynn off big bro has no clue how to boil an egg.

Its the ready meal/take-away generation .. and it sucks , unhealthy and cost loads.

I wonder what I'm doing wrong. One of my friends has stopped cooking for her family now she has had their second child. Me, I'm always in the kitchen.
However, that I think that women who don't cook are wise, but those who can't cook are stupid
