Any valid answer to this question, would have to satisfy this equation as well; God=Jesus=Resurrection. Because there was little likelihood of this society breeding their selves into as many descendants as Abe, (all the stars in the sky) you can limit the magnitude of your question by trillions. So, even without fire and brimstone, God's will was done in regards to the City's longevity. That's how the Resurrection destroys...by not creating...

The father (God) the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit are one and the same.... but Jesus did not come about until the New Testament.. therefore He did not want to destroy Sodom... that was all God.... and yes.. Jesus is loving and forgiving... He died for each and every person on this earth so that we did not have to die for our own sins... A perfect being.. God made Himself into the form of man and beared sin and every ugly thing on this earth to save our lives.... when we ask for forgivess and admit and confess our sins.. we have a clean slate.. it is like we have never done anything wrong... yes God was once angry and vengeful with the unholy and sinful people but His sending down of Jesus took that away b/c we can depend on Jesus to take care of that

God did NOT want to destroy S & G. He and Abraham bartered for a while. Abraham asked if God would spare the city if 50 righteous people could be found. He talked God down to 10 people. If there were just 10 good men in the city God would leave it be. God doesn't WANT to destroy. Sometimes, like a hornet nest on the front porch, somethings just have to be removed.

There were not even 10 good men.

Jim, there are two types of divine punishment. A temporal type is when God punishes people on the earth for their sin. Its means may include famine, disease, war, etc. A final type is when Jesus will pronounce judgment on people based on their faith at what's called the "Great White Throne Judgment." If God is just in administering both types of judgments, then yes, this would include His being just in judging Sodom in the way He did.

Jesus is the "Son of God". God wants to destroy sin. Not so much the people. But sometimes it is necessary to destroy the people to destroy the sin. People have a choice to turn away from the sin.

It's totally fair and just that God brings justice to this earth, to those who align with the "lust of the flesh" and / or Satan.
