As other answers have indicated any stroke is an excellent workout but I would start with the standard crawl. Get proper instruction so your technique is correct. Other strokes can follow if you wish. Walking and other exercises in a pool are also great. You should keep in mind that swimming uses large muscles groups so the heart pumps harder to fill your muscles with oxygen enriched blood. Your initial workouts will be hard and you will get very tired in a short period of time. Of course you will get better and better but this is the reason many people quit swimming. So hang in there or find another exercise you can enjoy and stick with.

Just to stay afloat, you need to move all your major muscles in swimming. It's very tiring at first -- but I find being in the water also is very, very relaxing... Do you know any strokes? The longer you swim, the more weight you'll lose. Even if you can't swim, water resistence against your muscles during water aerobics gives you more 'bang for your buck' than regular aerobic activity. Obviously, some strokes are more complicated and use the muscle more -- but all swimming will give you all-over exercise and feels great.

Call your local YMCA or gym (or even some hotels, like Holiday Inn have community memberships) for lessons or membership info. Have fun!

swimming is an excellent exercise, an it doesnt matter what stroke you use, If you swim a few laps a day you will notice the loss of weight, and building of muscle in less than 3 weeks, if you do it daily. You will also become more cardio-effective as well. Swimming is good for respitory system as well.

Best exercise hands down, another really really good exercise is jumping rope, if you are capeable you will love what this exercise can do for you!

I don't swim, I do deep water aerobics. You can move a lot longer in the water than on land and do more complex exercises. You will feel a difference in as little as a week if you're really dedicated. You don't lose much weight at first but you get much sleeker/stronger and look a lot thinner (replacing fat with muscle which weighs 2.5x more but takes up l2.5x less room).
I have a lot of information on my blog about my workout routine.
