for people that actually "touch type" the phone number..

ie. you fee the number "5" as like your home base, then you reach out and you can touch all the other numbers and return your finger back to "home base", to then again touch the next number to dial.

Is it to allow you to know where the center of the keypad it without looking? Similar to how the markings on letters F and J on a keyboard mark the home keys.

Because it is the center of the numerical pad. Place your finger on the center key (just like a calculator) & learn what keys the other fingers on same hand can click. Then you can click keys without looking. 0 is the thumb. Also useful for those who are sight impaired.

if u having trouble reading the numbers you know when you feel that bump you are on five. the middle of the key pad. from here all numbers are only one away except for zero of course

a small raised bump for people who are blind...and those who have learned to dial without looking...it clues you in your fingers are on the right keys.

The whole keypad is one piece usually and that mark is from the manufacturing.
