I ask because there seems to be not much importance placed on things like no graven images, and not working on the sabbath, etc? Does the new testament supercede this somehow?

In Jeremiah 3, God tells us He divorced the Jewish people because of numerous spiritual adultries (idolatry). However, He makes it clear that He will remarry Israel as long as she doesn't "remarry" another god.

God tells us at Jeremiah 31:31 that this divorce will require a New Covenant. Christians and Messianic Jews believe Jesus not only fulfilled the Old Covenant (because He was the first One to keep it fully), but that He glorified the existing Laws, and gave us God's New Covenant, activated upon His death.

The Books of Romans and Hebrews tell us the role of the 10 Commandments, which is an integral part of the 613 Laws given through Moses:

For a non-believer, the Law serves to show humanity that it cannot possibly live up to God's standard of righteousness; that these are the standards by which they will be judged; and that a Savior is needed in order for anyone to be held blameless on the last day. Without this Savior, a non-believer will be judged fully guilty by God. Good works are not factors that keep this guilt from being punished.

For a Christian, the entirety of the Mosaic Law serves as our "tutor." It demonstrates God's standard, showing us how we should live. The 10 Commandments are "Moral Laws," followed even by non-believers. But the remainder of the Laws are just as instructional: for example, the Laws regarding tithing are not applicable to Christians; HOWEVER, Jesus commands us to give to the poor, needy and helpless; He also commanded us not to have any gods before the One True God -- and the love of money is a form of idolatry. The Commandment against graven images is a prohibition against idolatry, not against mere images or even playtoys, as some have claimed in Yahoo Answers; since we are to love God with all our "mind, soul and strength," idolatry is spiritual adultry, a definate sin. Similarly, the Commandment to observe the Sabbath started as a way to force the Jews to take just one day to worship God; it is NOT a Commandment that forces weekly corporate worship, except for the Levite priests. Christians and Messianic Jews understand that the concept of the Sabbath is superceeded by the need to CONSTANTLY worship God, wherever they go, whatever they do, and under all circumstances. We are to "pray without ceasing" and "in everything give thanks, for this is the Will of God..."

Once a believer has these Laws written in his or her heart, they "graduate" from being under the Law's tutelage; they are now lead by the Holy Spirit, who dwells within all believers. This doesn't mean a believer is free to sin, however.

For a deeper understanding, I urge you to study the Books of Romans and Hebrews.

Well, I go to a catholic school but I am not catholic or christian. But I do show some of my respect to God. So in a scale between 1 to 10 I would say I closely follow the 10 commandmeants in a number scale 5. And you do have a point for sabbath day. Many people work on sabbath day when they should go to church. But some people are trying to earn money to help their famliy. But now some people care less about the enviroment and that is just wrong dont you think so Chris? Sorry but i don't know what supercede means.

Excuse me??? Thomasa06, Christians are most definitely NOT above the 10 commandments! What a pompous fool you are. Jesus eliminated the sacrifical commands, but not the 10 commands. He is God and He made those commands for all of Humanity, not just the Jews.

As to the original question, I try to follow them, but the using the Lord's name in vain, Keeping the Sabbath and lying are still issues for me. That is why I need Salvation through Christ.

I follow the 10 commandments as close as possible. You can have any image in your house, or with you, as long you don't worship the image. That's just common sense. The sabbath is not Saturday, or, even Sunday. Our Sabbath is God. God is the our rest through Jesus Christ. The word of god is our rest. When you read the bible, don't you feel peace come to you?
Luke 6:5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Are you asking because you want to have a graven image , or
because you want to work on Sunday?

Are YOU a Christian?

You know how the Old Testament paves the way for the New Testament----they are alike ---they have the same good news!!

By the way, I have broken commandments, I'm sure, but I didn't know of Christ and His saving grace. But NOW!! I AM saved, and I just try my best to keep them.

lol to whoever said the 10 commandments are for Jews, not Christians. That's a good one!

I follow them very closely. Like not working on the Sabbath, which for me is Sunday, not Saturday. It's how we as a family plan our week. I get all the housework and such done by Saturday night, and on Sunday, we go to church, come home and have lunch and lounge around relaxing and enjoying being with each other.

It's not just for spiritual use, that commandment is also practical. Everyone needs one day to relax; even God took a day off!

My friend, the 10 commandments was meant as a guideline for our lives. But there is nobody in this world can obey them perfectly. Why? Because all Adam's descendants are condemned under sin. It means, nobody will go to heaven by good deeds.

That's why Christ came to this world. He redeemed us through His death on the cross. Now we live in new time: New Testament Age. The Old Testament rules are just like "shadow" for us now, to understand God's will and God's salvation plan.
Of course you should obey 10 Commandments. But do them for love, not for others' praises. Do them as your gratitude to Jesus.

Perhaps you can ask further details to your priest.

The 10 commandments were for Moses and his descendants to follow. When Jesus came to Earth - He came to fulfill the laws and bring a new covenant for all - now all have the hope of eternal life.

Did Jesus work miracles on the sabbath? He sure did and to the point where He was criticized for not following the law.
