this is no easy question. It depends alot on what you want to acheive, high muscle definition or quick repairing muscle, for weight gain or as a meal replacement etc. There are such a variety out there, protein made from whey, soya or protein from egg etc. Go to a sports nutrition shop that sells a good selection. You need a good one that is an Isolate for a better quality, and expect to pay for quality. I personally feel that in this instance, quality will really reflect in price. Also check for the other ingredients as many are full of unnatural sugars and additives. At the moment I am using Ultralife ultra+ shake, the chocolate one is very nice and leaves no nasty aftertaste. I am using it as a meal replacement and am losing about 1lb a week. It appears to have many natural products in it. Also you could use creatine which is supposed to be very good for quick muscle repair.

Milk is actually pretty good. If you are looking for a supplement, the Body Fortress line of Whey Protein is very reasonably priced. I am not sure how good their protein is, but it is by far the cheapest (about $12 a tub). It tastes pretty good too.

The typical American already eats more protein that even elite athletes need so protein shakes or products should be avoided. Eat beef, chicken, and fish for your protein sources but keep the portions small (about the size of a deck of cards).

Eggs tuna and chicken, steaks are good, beware nuts and dairy as they tend to add a layer of subcutaneous fat.
