my childrens date of birth are october 1994 and august 1992. so far in their school career there has been a 2 year academic gap. I find it difficult to accept and explain to my younger child that there is now a 3 year gap because she has moved country. I appreciate that there must be a national age group according to which children are put into correct school years , but surely there must be exceptions to children who have studied elsewhere previously,as now my child will be doing an extra year of schooling, finishing well after her previous classmates.

she sees this as repeating a year, which can not be good for her confidence.

This problem occurs within the UK as well were Scotland and the rest of the country have different cut off dates for when birthdays fall. This also means that Scots sit their exams, and leave school around 12-18 months younger than their peers in the rest of the country. As someone has already said, the system can be very inflexible. In Scotland though parents could decide to bump up their kids into a higher year. I had a friend at school in Scotland whose younger sister was in the same year as her as her mother sent her to school before her 4th birthday so that she'd be in the same class as her sister

The state system seems to be completely inflexible over things like this. In Private School I had been put up a year as I was doing very well, if I had been in a state school I would have been kept back. I unfotunately do not know about the Irish system but over here the cut off date is the end of August, this would have been frustrating for me as my birthday is early September!

Try talking to school or the Local Education Authority, if you can afford it go private!

Present it to her as a chance to get even better at things.
She will be a year older and a year more mature leaving school.

By the second week in September she'll have new friends and will have forgotten the 3 year gap. Making a big deal out of it will make her think there is something wrong. She will probably be top of the class if she has already done the work for the equivalent year in Ireland.

She won't be comparing herself to the friends in her Irish school unless you do.
