If 2 scarts on telly:
DVD player to telly,(directly)
SKY to Video Recorder (by scart "in") (or satellite in)
Video Recorder to Telly (by second scart)
You can then record from SKY, as long as your not watching a different Sky cannel. Can watch dvd or tv while recording sky.
Use Tv's "AV" button to switch between DVD and SKY.
(you will need a regual ariel in the Video, to record regular tv, if you want to watch sky while recording different regulat tv program). For video, put in a video, press play, it will automatically override sky signal to telly, and play the video.
If ONE scart on tv:
Sky to Video, (by scart)
Video to tv (by only scart on TV)
IF you have 2 scart inputs on video (inputs! so THREE scarts on Video, altogether, one is "out", to the tv)
connect DVD to video.
Use Video's "AV" button to switch between Sky and DVD.
IF only two scarts on video (one "in", one "out")
You have to manually change scart in Telly, to watch a dvd, and loose Sky, temporarily.
You can buy scart junction boxes from argos, I think, check out if your short on scart sockets on video/tv.

My TV has two scart inputs, but I have at least four devices (video, DVD, two games consoles) which I have permanently plugged in; I have a switched scart box, so I can push a button and switch the input, the output from the switch box goes to one of the TV scart sockets, my DVD player goes to the other tv scart socket (the TV automatically switches channels when I turn on the DVD player).

If you wish to record from satellite then you probably should connect the output from the sat box to the video input (scart) - each scart will be marked 'Input' or 'Output' or 'I/O' (can be used for either input or output); you may need to tune your video AV channel to the sat box output, refer to your video manual for this.

Sat boxes usually encourage you to plug in your normal TV arial to it instead of the TV or video, but you could probably just plug the TV arial into the video instead.

You cannot normally record from a DVD because of the protection on commercial movie discs, so you should plug the DVD player straight into the TV (or via a scart switch box).

It can seem complicated with wires going everywhere, but there isn't really a simple way of explaining it! Here's my summary anyway:
TV Arial -,
Sat -> Video -> TV
DVD -> TV

(optional scart switch box between video/DVD and TV if you don't have enough scart inputs on your TV)

It would be helpful to know how many scart sockets you have in each appliance. They are the big connections kind of rectangular with funny ends and lots of pins.

Buy a multiple scart socket, they sell them in the pound shops, don't pay £12 for one, I bought one last week for 59p.
