English is very widely spoken in Europe and it's used in international relations nowadays and it's taught in schools now. Russian is spoken by most 30+ year olds in east Europe, in many former communist countries everyone had to learn Russian before.
So pretty much wherever you go in Europe, people will speak either some English or some Russian.
