circumcision is probably not a mandate of islam, but most muslims expect it and a few demand it.
though in the faith's defence islam asks for circumcision at an age when a boy is able to at least consent in his own circumcision (to some extent anyway).

Anyone claiming that there are never infections or complications is lying. All medical procedures that involve incisions, no matter how well performed (and how qualified the doctors are), has some risk of infections. They do happen and even the most skilled surgeon can still perform a circumcision that leads to infection. The procedure has risks like any other.
As to whether or not it is compulsory - it is done by the vast majority of Muslims. It may not be absolutely required, but it is certainly a heavy and strong cultural norm. I have spoken to a few Muslims who were not circumcised, but these are even rarer than uncircumcised Jews.

Circumcision is not the end ot the world if it's done well and the outcome is successful but it's risky and unnecessary.
Circumcision can lead to infection and almost always leaves ugly scarring, the head of the penis the glans will be scaly & dry looking and desensitised instead of shiny the way it should be on a penis that is unmutilated.
If infection sets in the penis may become disfigured or in severe cases the whole thing will need to be removed, and anyway sometimes too much flesh is removed making erection difficult or painful or just makes the penis look ugly.
There are no special hygeine benefits that are not better addressed by washing regularlyand these days everyone can shower or wash daily...most of us are not desert nomads without running water.
Circumcision removes the natural gliding motion during intercourse that the foreskin would naturally provide making it painful for the woman without artificial lubricants, lubricants will also be required even for masturbation if a male is circumcised.
Sexually mutilating your children because of religious tradition seems extreme to me. Many men who were cut as infants feel they were violated.
Whether forced on someone as an infant or they are coerced into it as a boy, I think it is an extreme and unnecessarily risky practice.
Condoms best address the issue of sexually transmitted diseases like Aids etc whether a man is circumcised or not.
Wouldn't a little tattoo on the forearm or similar work better as a religious symbol as well as a reminder to wash. Think laterally!

Every male child is circumcised in my country.. The qualified surgeons also do it. NEVER has there been a report about infection or a protest when child or infant becomes adult. Female circumcision is not allowed. This may have been a continuing tribal custom in some African areas. The religious part of the question has been answered by others. About ugly scars, well it is the private part and exhibitionism is a sin. In my case, there is no scar and no ugliness to my wife.

Circumcision as prescribed by Islam involves cutting the foreskin covering the glans of the penis only.
Circumcision is one of the characteristics of the fitrah (the natural state of man), and it is one of the symbols of the Muslims, because it is narrated in al-Saheehayn that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The (characteristics of) the fitrah are five: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the moustache, cutting the fingernails and plucking the armpit hairs.’” So he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) started with circumcision and said that it is one of the characteristics of the fitrah.

Yes. Boys get it when they are little. So it gets well sooner and they do not feel much pain and it does not affect their daily life.
