Michigan isn't dying. If the 70's didn't kill it with the auto industry laying off people up to 36 yrs seniority, the oil embargo, couldn't get gas, Detroit dying on the vine, nothing will. Sounds like you need a change. I Joined the military and got as far as away as possible. Did me a world of good and I even occasionally go back for a visit now.

Michigan isn't dying. And, if any place is doing well, it is the Grand Rapids area. The Grand Rapids metro area has added 60,000+ residents in the past five years. The unemployment rate is around the national average. There are many state parks and Great Lakes beaches in the area. Many new highrises are being built downtown (including a prestigous JW Marriot hotel). Construction cranes dot the landscape.

And, just in the past week, Google announced they are going to locate there first major facility outside California in Ann Arbor.

The primary reason for decline is NAFTA- both Auto and other industry such as Electrolux in Greenvile and hundreds of other small industry have packed up and moved to Mexico or sent production to China- Of course the Auto Industry moving plants to Mexico is the prime factor- But hey we are on a roll, Google is building a Plant in Ann Arbor to employ 1000 people , Gov Gram, is leading the way to bring Mi into the Tech field. Don't ask me what Google needs a plant for, but I do know they will be in Ann Arbor in a year or so.
This is a long story, but another reason is pirating by other States, who offer no taxes, Free Factories and Equipment to move there, all paid for by Gov Bond issues.

My personal opinion is that the car companies have made a big mistake in choosing their product line (inefficient cars). They are now starting to feel the market reaction to this and thus there are fewer jobs available in the area. This has had kind of a chain reaction effect.

It only affects my mood because it affects the people around me. If we could all just accept that it's gunna rain sometimes, we can still go shopping, to the movies, or even the beach if we so please. But now it being cold is a different story. I'm locked inside with a heater and a snuggie.

Unions and incompetent politicians have done it and will continue to do so.

Kinda odd that companies like Honda and Toyota are in great shape, pay the same and are non-union,

Get rid of the UAW and you will see improvement.
