I tried the search engine already. It seems this song was not written by Joan Baez. Lyrics mania did not have it being categorized according to name of Author.

The song is called, surprise surprise, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. The song was written by JR (Robbie) Robertson in 1969/70, but several others have sung it subsequently. The Baez cover was in the album Blessed Are... (1971).

Points to sndsouza. It was originally recorded by The Band on their album (surprise surprise) "The Band". If you're going to do a search, look under "The Band Lyrics" or possibly J.R. Robertson, you'll find it easily.
