No, they do not. If you get what we call a "guarantee" it means that you will be guaranteed the category of stateroom you paid for - the cabin number will be assigned when you check in at the cruise terminal. The advantage to booking a "guarantee" is that you get good pricing, and often get an upgrade in the bargain. (This does not mean that you will upgraded from an inside to an ocean view stateroom - what it means is that you will most likely be moved to a higher deck). A "guarantee" often gets you an upgrade, but the only thing the cruise line is obligated to do is to put you in the cabin class you paid for. It's a gamble to book a "guarateed" rate, but more often than not, it pays off.
You can request a cabin location when you check in at the port. For example, if you get seasick, you surely do not want a forward stateroom. Of course, if you do get seasick, I would not book a "guaratee" rate, because you will be much more likely to get a cabin in a location you are not going to be happy about - you will get what's left. Cruise ships tend to sell out this way - highest and lowest categories first, middle categories last; midships staterooms first, aft staterooms next, forward staterooms last.
Get a hold of a travel agency specializing in cruises. It will not cost you any extra, and the service will be worth it.

It depends on what you have booked. If you book a regular room, you actually get to pick your room, or your travel agent will pick for you. As long as your room is in the right category, you can pick anyone.
However, if you book a guarentee room, they won't give you a room number until shortly before you cruise. A guarentee from is a benefit to the customer. This is when you pay for a category, let's say that you pay for an inside room. The cruise line doesn't assign you a room because they don't have anymore left in that particular category, at this point it is overbooked. When it becomes time to issue documents and assign rooms, they will then give you your room number. This is where the benefit is to you. If there are still no rooms left in the category that you paid for, they will continue to upgrade you until there is a room available in a category. So, this means you may be upgraded to an oceanview or verandah room, but only paid for an inside room. No matter how far they upgrade you, you only have to pay for the category that you booked. Sometimes they will find a room in your cateogry that you booked, other times you may get upgraded all they way to a suite.
So, you won't actually get a room assigned, but it really is a big benefit. Once they do assign your room, you can call and see if another room is available in the category you were put in if you don't like it.
So, the cruise line does HAVE to give you a room number, but you would know if it was a situation where you wouldn't get a room.

No they dont. But you do get a cabin in a set area of the deck . It will all depend on how much you pay for your cabin.

If you have a cabin guarantee you do not get a cabin number.
If there is a cabin you want (sailing w/ friends) then you can get a cabin number.
