If you didn't complete the paperwork then there's no way around the fine. Also if the new owner commits any traffic offences (speeding, double-yellow parking, etc), you may still be liable for the fine and penalty points. You'll need to let the DVLA know as soon as possible so they can update their records.

The rules are clear enough, you MUST inform DVLA of any change of ownership, its precisely for this reason! Makes no difference if SORN, its the ownership thats the issue

If you notified them that the car was SORN then sold it you should have notified them. You could appeal or pay the fine i dont think there is a way round it otherwise.

Appeal to their better nature and hope for the best. This happened to me, and I told the company fining me all the details I could of when and whom to I had sold the car, they left me alone on one of them, the other I had to pay.

Write to them and say there was a family crisis at the time which made informing them slip your mind. Theyre not monsters and will prob scrap the fine if you are nice.

I know it's not what you want to here - but that's why sometimes DVLA records are not updated, not informing of changes.

Oopsy, that was silly wasn't it? The only way out of the fine is if you have a receipt from the sale.
