Be a man. Go up to her, look her in the eye, smile, and say "Hello, my name is ________, what's your name?"
You will pickup a vibe from her. If it's hard to talk to her, she is not interested. If she helps you carry the conversation, she is either sweet, and/or likes you. I was riding the bus one time and this guy wanted to talk to me. At first I didn't want to talk to him--Have this rule about strangers--but he was persistant. So do what he did, be persistant. Also, don't look like a slob--it make you look like a drunk and causes suspicion. Only thing that guy did wrong was not give me his number, never saw him again.
