You mentioned: "Why not just punish the bad and reward the good?" GOD looks at the Big Picture while you on the other hand have a very narrow vision of what is Good & what is Bad. It really takes a very wise Sage to understand the balance of Good & Evil - in fact both factors (Good & Evil) are GOD's allies.

You mentioned: "I beleive in god but why should I, he or she's never done anything for me - and i'm generally a good person!"
GOD has already given you everything, it is now up to you to decide your life directions & goals. And if you think by being good you should be rewarded with wealth & material goods then you're again in your own illusion. Mother Theresa was a very kind loving soul but she had nothing materialistically or monetarily. Instead she was the most contended lady materially as well as able to live a very rich purposeful life.

If you look back in your life, you may well find ways He has helped you that you didnt see before. He protects us and nurtures us in ways we cannot know or understand. Even without truly believing in Him, He draws you near and wants to have a relationship with you. He does punish the bad, and reward the good, just not in ways we would do it, He is God after all. He promises us that if we believe in His Son, we will be richly rewarded in Heaven. I would rather have a reward that lasts eternity than one which fizzles out the moment I die. IF you are serious about this question, pick up a Bible, go to church a few times, listen to that voice within that is Him. He always answers our prayers, just not always the way we think or want him to. He moves in mysterious ways, because He is God, not human, and is all powerful and capable of things we cannot even imagine or understand. Ask a preacher or priest, or other Christians what He has done for them, you may find some similarities in your own life.

We have choices to make and there is a reason for the way we choose to make those choices. There is also an unknown effect from those decisions which we are responsible for.

We must learn to choose wisely because humans are causing sooooo much destruction to this amazing jewel in the Universe that we have been given to journey and learn on.

And we must try to learn from what we do.

We are not to know all the answers, we are to learn.

Even though there are awful things happening in the world, we cannot explain them or understand them, like kids dying of cancer and innocent people dying and suffering. We cannot do anything about these things.

All we can do is just keep pushing on the best we can!

The only way is forward not backwards. I have lost children myself, but I have learnt that they are in a better place than here, and I send them love and pray they be ok. It is all we can do. We cannot see these things with these eyes, but believe that the love reaches them and is also sent to us. We are often just too busy to receive it, but it's ther alright.

Believe that there is always Love, and that in some way and many ways you be lifted and shone strong.

God is Love!!! And Love is The most powerful thing there is, anywhere in the Universe. We cannot see but we can follow from our hearts.

Even in our darkest times, we will be strengthened if only we open our hearts to God and do the good we can.

Respect love and you will be helping others not only yourself.

How do you know that the bad are not punished and the good rewarded? You only see thru your eyes and believe. He (God) comes in many forms to punish the bad and reward the good ones. Since you believe in God never have this feeling and please deepen your faith towards him. And since you are a good person, he will reward you with plenty of good fortune.

He wants people to learn to Love Him.

When he brought the children of Israel from Egypt, they saw Him do many awsome things, and even heard His voice. But they did not love Him, they were afraid of Him.

In the Old Testament He also used prophets, kings, and silence. But the people still did not stay in love with Him.

Now He is calling us in a whisper, quietly drawing us to Him, through His word and His Spirit, so that we can have a personal relationship with Him.

He has done things for you. He died on a cross so that you can ask for forgiveness for your sins. He does not punish you (in the physical) every times you sin, He has given you another day to experience and to enjoy(can you still see today? Take time to look at a flower, the clouds, a friends face, read His word.)

Someone is going to say because of "original sin." The real answer is there is no rhyme or reason. I just went to the funeral of a 2 year old baby who spent the last 8 months of her life in the hospital fighting cancer. Yet, sexual predators walk free. Personally, I am not the least bit consoled by the idea they might be judged later on. That does nothing to put closure on these discrepancies in this lifetime.

Says who? God works through normal ways. He does not go against the natural law. He cannot. If he does, then he will be contradicting himself. Water always flows down. Try to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. There are ample examples around. God works through nature. Nature takes its own course.

never done anything for you .... wonder who it is that gives you breath?
Could it be that God sees and knows things that we don't and is more about rewarding those who are obedient?

A profit once said that even our very best deeds are like filthy rags to God... maybe he was right
