Putting your feet in an elevated position puts more strain on your arm muscles, therefore making it harder to do bench presses.

It simply varies on how difficult you want to make it.

The correct way is indeed putting your feet on the floor. However, I used to put mine on the bench. I felt this better stabilized my core and didn't allow me to cheat my chest by arching my back. I suppose you could do that either way, but you can do it more easily by placing your feet on the bench.

You take away some of your power when you put your feet on the bench as you can't drive your legs into the ground the same way.

I don't see it as a major crime to do it either way, but you are more stable with your feet on the floor.

Because they think they can lift more weight that way. The correct position is feet flat on the ground and torso fully extended on the bench with the natural curvature of the spine.
