Your poor dog! Because he is so frightened and because storms can pop up at any time you need to come up with a storm plan that will let your dog know that he is safe and cared for. Let him out of the crate! You could move him to a bedroom, laundry room or bathroom - any room that is dog proof and preferably has few or no windows- with a fuzzy dog blanket on the floor. Be sure to put a radio in the room and turn way up so all he can hear is boogie-woogie or your favorite tunes loud. Also put a doggy treat or Kong toy with peanut butter inside. Use a baby gate or close the door. Reassure your dog that everything is OK and do your best to distract him until you get him calmed down in his special room. Doggy downers for the Fourth of July is a good idea - but sometimes storms happen before you have time to medicate the dog. Do your best to remain calm and act quickly at the first rumble. The sooner the less damage to you or furniture!

A dog can often act like a child in some respects. If handling him isn't too much of a problem, firmly yet gently grasp his collar and pet him when a thunderstorm begins. Talk to him by saying "Good Boy, it's O.K." Dogs understand the inotation of our voices, and not the actual words, so try to be calm even though he isn't. Pet him while you are doing this, and if he has a favorite toy or chewbone, let him munch on this as it will distract him and calm him down. It's not a good idea to seclude him; he's probably breaking out not just because of fear, but possibly to be near you. This may be wrong, but I hope it might be of some help.

He must be scared to death of thunderstorms. It's got to be a real irational fear if he can break through steel. He sounds like some sort of Super Dog. The sould of the thunder must bring that out in him.

when there's a thunder storm leave him lose in the house and see where he runs to as he will want to be where he feels the safest. once he has found this place try to make that room as quiet and calm as possible. then leave him alone and give him no attention as this will reinforce his panic. (he doesnt feel safe in the crates)
he will soon learn that he is safe and as no one else panics then there is no need for him to.
also vets sell some plug in scented airfresherners that are meant to calm animals down.

Stop crating him. Try asking your vet for tranquilizers that you can give him during the storms. And make sure you are with him when the storms occur, he might now be so frightened.

hes afraid of the storms. He is like a baby. He want to be close to you and be treated like a baby. He want to be held anf you are not there to calm him down. then he is gunna go crazy and plus you cannot put him in the crates. Hes watch dog, maybe he wants to be out and watch the house make sure nuthing is going to happen. He wants to be there for you and you will have to be there for him too. I have 2 dogs myself and one of them are german shepard and other one is not. they both are afriad of storms and they come to me, all I need to do is pet them and calm them down. Talk to them. You need to do the same with your dog.

He seems to be afraid of the storms, I would suggest you take him to your bed with you and comfort him, that way you can also bond, just dont let him stay in his crate scared, its too cruel.

Sounds like your dog needs some "doggie downers". I bet the Fourth of July isn't high on his favorite list either.
