At $550 (without lenses or a memory card) it's a fantastic camera and it gets rave reviews from www.dpreview.com and Steve's Digicams, the two best review sites out there.
The one drawback that I've heard of, is the relatively poor performance of the 18-55mm lens that you can buy with it as a kit. A lot of people recommend that you pay a small premium and get a D50 with the 18-70mm lens (the one that comes standard with the Nikon D70)
I use a Nikon D200 myself, but I'm no fan boy. The D50 is simply the best camera for under $700 (the price of a Canon Rebel XT.)
