okay first lets define phonics... phonetics are how the letter sounds rather than what it looks like. it was started by the Phoenicians (phonics...Phoenicians get it? lol) they came up with an alphabet in which the characters were based on how they would be used in a word by sound rather than hieroglyphics, or pictures used to denote and event or a part of speech. The Greeks adapted to it first and then finally our english system is now based on it. When viewing the characters of the Phoenician alphabet, Greek alphabet, and the English alphabet you notice that the charcters or letters are similar. Through time the characters changed or were remembered incorrectly and that's how our Alphabet evolved. okay so are you with me so far? okay well hooked on phonics is a learning program to teach those who are troubled in reading how to pronounce the sounds of the characters in our alphabet.

Additional information

There are different languages in the world because... when they came up with language people knew it, but when people began to migrate different directions they "kinda" forgot original pronounciation of words, notice how in different languages words are not the same but fairly similar. as people migrated they all learned a different pronounciation of words than what they originally were. Thus no one there to correct them, thus they thinking it is right, thus orally passing it down to offspring and other people, thus creating new languages for different parts of the world.

It's a gateway habit. First it's phonics, then before you know you're diagramming sentences and by the time you hit bottom you're writing analyses of classical literature. It's not pretty, but it happens to millions of students every year.

(In real life, there was a series of pop arrangements of classical music released in the early '80s called "Hooked on Classics", and the "Hooked on Phonics" program was a play on the name.)

phonics is a way of spelling like it sounds and/or reading by knowing how the combo of letters is supposed to sound
there's a big controversy raging (imho), about all the "wrong spelling" going on, well, because text messaging, etc acronyms shorthand words, like thru not through
so many people typing nowadays,
thats why its called a typo not a misprint
hooked means addicted

There are numerous documented benefits and advantages of teaching children to read early on, and teaching them to reading using phonics and phonemic awareness instructions. It is clear that early language and reading ability development passes great benefits to the child as they progress through school at all grades, and that early language and reading problems can lead to learning problems later on in school.
