Many believe that religion is real, which is equally balanced with those oposing those views. Many philosophers have also pondered these thoughts and many seem to come to different conclusions. Using philosophical views to back up your claims, do you believe religion is merely a waste of time and an easy answer to all our problems and mysteries in life?

in my opinion, religion is the language of the unconscious and is consequently (see Carl Jung) a reality, the conscious mind understands the world through material, empirical means and is right to. the unconscious mind is older than the conscious and is equally valid as a tool of understanding and awareness. If you look at philosophers that discredit religion such as Nietzsche despite their efforts create a new religious figure to fill the space such as the superman. Their obsession for the material approach to metaphysics cannot resist the draw of the poetry of their sleeping mind. The problem for most is not being able to accept that two things can be true at the same time (see Taoist philosophy) :)

Philosophy of religion is a subset of Philosophy, as much as metaphysics is or epistemology or philosophy of language. A serious philosopher would not dismiss religion as a waste of time, but examine religious claims on the basis of reason.
Philosophy does not claim to answer all problems or mysteries of life. If it could, there'd be no need for religion. A lot of life's mysteries cannot be solved at the present stage of knowledge (science, etc.). We will, for example, never know how the earth came about. Best we can do is speculate with a greater or lesser degree of certainty. Where we lack the scientific answers, religion steps in and offers an explanation (mostly bogus, but it's still an explanation).
On the other hand, certain religious truths have become obsolete. For example those that relate to human biology, geography or astronomy and physics. Ex: Can you think of a religious person who still believes that a man who cannot perform sexually has been bewitched and that therefore the witch must be burnt?
As we acquire more and more scientific knowledge, the need for religion will decrease. This is evidenced today by the fact that we have heated debates over such things as abortion, euthanasia, etc.

i said i was not going to get drawn into more religious debates, but here i am
here is my views
i have studied and read the bible
i have studied and read what scientist have concluded
and my conclusion is i believe man came to a crossroads in life, being a great leader, and seen people needing something to motivate them and realized they needed something to grasp onto,to give them hope, something to look forward to so he created the myth of gods, for man has created many of gods and many of a man believed in there gods,so it was intended for good
nothing wrong with lifting the hope for man,its just got out of hand, now it seems more man uses there god to condemn man than to give hope
so if one wants to believe in a god thats ,there right
just do not pray for me for my destiny is mine to make and it is done written that after my body gets cremated and my ashes poured back on mother earth my life cycle will have come full circle and complete
so you determine your own destiny the way your mind and heart sways you to go
