Or could it be that all violence is due to attempts to take, or be in control of, limited resources? (land, water, oil, etc) What I mean is, If you could magically divide the land, the water, Holy places, as well as any and all of the resources above and below the land, and do it equally between groups of equal size and technology (technology is not the word I want, but I'm stuck), Would they still kill each other? In this hypothetical world, there, of course, would be no "getting even" or "revenge" for past conflicts.

True. But religion creates limited resources that are not there. Religion is also used to band one group against another in conflict over these resources. So, no they are not based on conflicting beliefs but rather ignorance and minipulation of the masses.

Natural Resources minerals, vegitation, & Humans.
The other stuff religion, politics, etc. are just distractions for the common folk who refuse to think freely for themselves.
Consider the war in Ireland. It was about oppression by the Britts. They were the last hold out against the colonial imperialism. Religion played a part in recent times to cover the real issue. Over a period of time even the participants are distracted from the real issues.
Follow the money.
Religion is the way one conducts oneself . It is personal and individual. One can be member of the same labled relgious organizational system as a sibling, and yet not share the same beliefs, or conduct common to the organiztion or the family from which they come.
There is NO compulsion in religion. One may be raised in a home that claims to have beliefs associated with a particular organization and not agree with many of the precepts.
Resources are limited by our imaginations and most of our imaginations are controled. Reported shortages ard designed to fool common citizens. Imagination itself is a resource.
Huey P. Long senator and govenor of Louisianna, said there was enough for everyone to be royalty.
Greedy ones are eating your candy while saving theirs and will not share theirs when yours is all gone.
Look at the history. Liars, thieves and murderers, should be given consideration only as such. The mentality and morality of their 'successful" business practices continue because common citizens allow it.
Palestine was peaceful for a long time prior to 50 years ago. Jews muslims & christians got along quite well. until external influences corrupted the internal influences.

Religious wars are based on conflict of believe, but only in part. If people can just accept that not everybody believes in the same thing and have respect for the people who do not believe in the same thing as they do, then there won't be any religious wars. But the wars you are referring to isn't based on religion if you think about it.
Those are just normal wars that will eventually lead to another world war.
Lets do a little history lesson, what was world war 2 about? what are all wars in the past about?
Hope this answered you question to an extent.

There is no Religion promotes war.
And In Islam fighting in the Name of Allah/God is meant to simply wipe those who stand against enligtment of people-if needed- and maily directed to Rulers who stand against its people know and decide for themselves.
In Islam, never war could convert others to Islam as stated literally in Quran and Only God will could guide those seek guidance, but no human being has control over any other human being.
Thus, as this is not the case of any war today, Religion is used to help get people's support only while what behind it is simply material causes such as power, resources,etc..
And so these wars only promotes haterage and revenge.

From the beginning, Chiristian Revealtion has viewed the spiritual history of man as including, in some way, all religions, thereby demonstrating the unity of humankind with regard to the eternal and ultimate destiny of man. Instead of marveling at the fact that Providence allows such a great variety of religions, we should be amazed at the number of common elements found within them. JOHN PAUL II C.T.T.O.H. Your point that the economics of war matters, but the idea of equal shares making a change is false because it ignore the fact that no one wants fair or equal. they all want always will want and always have wanted "More" If you see someone with something you take it not because you want to be even but because if you can you want more than your neighbors, this is the whole foundation of competitive economics like capitalism.

The natural man is evil. It would make no difference how anything was, people would still find some sorry excuse to kill each other.
