Depends on your definition of cheap.I stayed in Shenzhen for a week, and the hotel we stayed in was at least 5 star quality, with a pool, sauna , spa, breakfast, and daily massage included for about 20 usd a night. My wife is from Shenzhen, but we now live in Beijing. She owns the lease on her apartment, it has a doorman, security, maid service 2 times a week, and a health club membership and we pay 3400 rbm ( about 425 usd, average 8 rbm = 1 usd ) a month. We're looking at 2 bedrooms now in a nice building for 2000 rmb. Taxis are averaging 15 rbm(2 usd) and buses are 1 rmb. Subways are cheap if you are near the station. Our car is our biggest expense for transportation, fuel is the same as in the west, and we pay 200 rbm a month to park it at home, and a parking fee everytime we go anywhere of about 2 rbm. And parking tickets are common, there are not any no parking signs and we average a 200 rbm ticket a month.Restaurants if you eat chinese for the 2 of us average 30-60 rbm, beer is 2 rmb, but a coke will cost 5 rmb. We buy cards for utilities, electric is about 20 usd a card and we use maybe 3 a month because I insist on AC. We bought 1 gas card for cooking at 25 usd a few months ago, but with restaurants so cheap we barely cook unless I get a craving for western food. If you go to tourists hotels, restaurants, ect.. expect to pay western prices. If you want to buy anything, negociate, 1/3 the asking price is usually what they will take. Be careful, found out the hard way if it says Sony on it and it looks real but is cheap, its probably faked.

The only things that have come down are clothes and houses. But people don’t give a crap about looking nice these days. Aldo I got a grand pair of bootleg shoes new for 2.50euro. I am serious. If you are rich you could get a house for cheaper. But food is still bloody dear. Tis 2euro in some places in Cork for flipping bread. I go make my own shall I, like the little red Hen? The joke is that my first round in the pub for two friends and me costs more than my entire Going out outfit. And it would be a nice outfit not some fertiliser bag sort of thing. I am forced to drink pints in my local homeland in Cork. Well I was never good at acting classy anyway. Cost 3euro for a half pint But 4.60 for a full pint. So I venture elsewhere out the county to annoy people. At least I can get my pints worth then. You get great deals on Hotels but that is pretty much it. The cost of regular living minus the perks is dear. The bus has gone up about euro every year for a trip here, for years. And the Government want us to take the bus, hmm. The cinema is only cheap in the summer at 11.30am in the morning. But that is only in the Summer time. Euro2 is still the same but you cannot get all your shop there. Unless you can live off noodles and chocolate. Things will go down all right. The whole country will. Basic maths you go up so high you are heading for a big fall. I will have my broadband set up in the Galtess in my wee cave at that stage. Have a few veg at the back. I must acquire a man that hunts and makes good alcohol though. Then I wont give a crap. Aldo I feel sorry for people who are older and have acquired things all their life. They may lose it now. And they are good people. That is very sad. Personally I do not care about my own circumstance. I have no kids to support and youth, looks and a bit of brains will always give you an advantage in Life once the Depression storm has passed away. Sad but true. Life is vain and cruel. There are worse things than being poor. You could be dead. And where would the fun be in that? I would not be able to annoy anybody. Isn’t it better to be born and walk through shite than to never have been born at all?

I cannot tell you in details on the cost of living. The 3 main cities in China, namely Guangzhou/Shenzen, Peking and Shanghai are quite the same standard in cost of living. Beside this 3 main cities, as a Singaporean I can tell you is very, very cheap. If you have relatives or friends living in any of the 3 main cities, they can bring you to places that is much more cheaper than you travel as a tourist. For your information.
